The Department has been in charge of running the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) on Outram Campus since May 1995.
MICU (1) and MICU (2) house a total of 15 individual rooms, each equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and latest technology to better take care of critically ill patients. A variety of sophisticated ventilatory techniques are available including non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and high flow nasal cannulae (HFNC).
The MICU is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of intensivists, residents, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists and pharmacists.
The Medical Intermediate Care Area (MICA) is also staffed by intensivists who take care of critically ill patients who do not yet need invasive mechanical ventilation. The premise comprising 10 beds, also complements MICU in providing intermediate step-down care for patients with critical illness.
In 2017, our unit established the first dedicated Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VV ECMO) Team in Singapore. This team is led by intensivists from the Department and manages patients with severe lung failure who need VV ECMO.
This team has a special interest in Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS), and its members have been trained in this field in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Korea.
We have a retrieval team from National Heart Centre Singapore that is capable of initiating ECLS for patients at referring hospitals and transporting them to SGH.
