Navigating the Weighty Maze: A Comprehensive Guide from Medications to Surgery and Beyond in Obesity Management

The rising prevalence of obesity leads to a corresponding increase in obesity-related complications such as type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. Like other chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, effective management of obesity requires a move beyond lifestyle management alone. Pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery are important adjuncts in the management of obesity. In recent years, newer glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists have been developed with easier administration and greater weight loss. There has also been advances in the understanding and technique of bariatric surgery.
In this lecture, participants will learn to review the utility of pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery in the management of obesity and discuss the role of the pharmacists in the post-bariatric surgery follow-up at SGH Obesity Centre.
