Crown Lengthening Surgery

Why do I need this?
This surgery aims to expose more of your tooth so that a proper crown or filling can be done. 

In certain cases, this surgery is also done to obtain a more pleasing and even gum line. 

What does it involve?

1. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia.
2. Excess gums are trimmed and adjusted.
3. The bone surrounding the teeth is assessed and any excess bone is trimmed if necessary.
4. Stitches are then placed to put the gums back together. A dressing may be placed to help keep the gums in the "new" position. 
   

What are the risks/complications?

Crown lengthening is considered a minor surgical procedure.

You will likely experience the following after the surgery, which should resolve on its own:

1. Increased tooth sensitivity
   
2. Increased tooth mobility

However, the following standard risks of surgery still apply, with a higher risk of occurrence in certain patient groups (e.g. immunocompromised patients, medically compromised patients on blood thinners):

1. Prolonged bleeding
2. Post-operative infection

In certain cases, the following complications may also happen:

        3. Numbness of the tongue due to injury to the lingual nerve 

What should I do to prepare for the surgery?

There is no need to fast prior to the surgery. It is advisable to have a light meal instead, especially if you are diabetic. You should continue taking your daily medications unless otherwise advised by your surgeon.

Do ensure that your oral hygiene is optimal prior to the procedure, as this would contribute to better healing after surgery.

What can I expect after the procedure?

1. There may be mild oozing/ bleeding from the site. Also, slight pain, swelling, and bruising at the area may be experienced in the first few days.
2. Painkillers and an antiseptic mouthrinse are usually prescribed.
3. Some shrinkage of the gums at the area is to be expected. This will result in larger gaps between the teeth at the area.
4. A follow-up appointment will be given to review the healing and remove the stitches in 7 to 10 days' time.
5. If sufficient exposure of the tooth could not be achieved during the surgery, or if there is substantial gum regrowth after the surgery, a repeat crown lengthening procedure may be necessary.
