Managing People Living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) – Practical Tips for the Generalist

With more potent antiretroviral therapies, people living with HIV (PLHIV) are living longer. As they age, more PLHIV are seeking medical care for other comorbidities like hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and many more. Their management will no longer be confined to the specialist care of infectious disease experts alone. Pharmacists from all settings will encounter more PLHIV in their daily practice. It is important for the generalist pharmacists to have a basic understanding on how HIV and comorbidities associated with aging can influence each other and affect choice of antiretroviral therapy. Pharmacists also have a critical role in managing polypharmacy, drug-drug interactions and long-term side effects from antiretroviral therapy as part of holistic care to this group of patients.
This lecture will provide generalist pharmacists an overview on how to approach PLHIV and manage common drug-related problems that they may encounter.
