Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders in Singapore. Three out of every 1000 population aged 50 years and above have PD. The majority are above 60 years old, though there are few as young as 40. As the population ages over time in Singapore, there will be an increased prevalence of people with PD; experts have postulated that PD patients will at least double if not triple by 2030. It is a long-term and progressive disorder, manifesting a complex spectrum of motor (movement related) and non-motor symptoms (non-movement related). These symptoms can vary from patient to patient, and worsen throughout the course of the disorder.
The severity of PD can be ranked using the Hoehn & Yahr (H&Y) scale, which describes the disorder progressing from stage 1 (mild; only affecting one side of the body) to stage 5 (advanced; wheelchair-bound or bedridden). While there is no cure for PD, the symptoms can be managed and alleviated through various therapies, for example medications, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.
