Sputum, pseudomembrane, nasal and throat swabs, swab from skin lesions. Request for detection of this organism must be specifically stated. Inform the laboratory beforehand so that the appropriate culture media may be prepared, particularly if several people are being screened for carriage.

Corynebacterium diphtheriae isolated; No Corynebacterium diphtheriae isolated
Negative : 2 days Positive : 3 – 5 days The ward will be informed earlier of any presumptive positive result pending further tests.
