The Department of Head and Neck Surgery functions as a one-stop,
integrated, department that manages patients with various benign and malignant
tumors of the head and neck region. Through clinical excellence, collaboration
and a holistic approach, we aim to meet the needs of patients through the
disease journey. We take a multidisciplinary approach led by the head and
surgeon with the patient at the centre of our efforts. This includes working
with specialists surgeons from other departments (plastics and reconstructive,
oro-maxillofacial, neuro-, cardiothoracic), physicians (endocrinologists,
nephrologists, rehabilitation physicians) and oncologists (radiation and medical
oncologists). Patient care is also carefully coordinated with the help of nurse
clinicians and navigators, speech, physio- and occupational therapists, and
clinical psychologists and medical social workers. Our surgeons are also at the
frontiers of technological advancements in the management of head and neck
tumors, including scarless thyroid surgery, robotic surgery, and non-invasive
ablation of benign thyroid conditions.
Apart from clinical excellence, we are a department committed to
education of trainee surgeons from Singapore and the region. We host trainees
from four surgical residency program (general surgery, ENT, oro-maxillofacial
and plastic surgery), and are an integral part of the Head and Neck Oncologic
Surgery fellowship program. We conduct regional training courses and have been
training fellows from many countries in Asia and beyond. Teaching and training
is also extended to medical students from all three medical school, as well as
nursing programs and speech therapists.
The department also boasts a long-standing record of research
excellence, with an aim to expand knowledge, make new discoveries and
ultimately change the way patients with head and neck cancers are treated.
Collectively, we have published over 150 papers in many high impact papers, and
our faculty are often invited to speak or on expert panels at many global
conferences.
Ultimately, our objective is to provide the best care to patients with
tumors of the head and neck, deliver tomorrow’s treatment, today.
