Sorafenib - What is it for

​Sorafenib is a medicine used in the treatment of Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma, Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma.

Sorafenib - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Sorafenib cause?

  • Rash, redness, dryness or itching of your skin
  • Numbness, tingling or unusual sensation in palms of hands or soles of feet
  • Diarrhea and/or stomach pain may occur
  • Gum bleeding
  • High blood pressure
    Your blood pressure should be monitored closely. Discuss a proper follow-up plan with your doctor.

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Ulceration, blistering, pain or swelling of the hands or feet
  • Prolonged gum bleeding or bleeding on other parts of the body
  • Chest pain or irregular heartbeat
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Severe headache or dizziness
  • Allergic reactions like rashes, swelling or breathing difficulties

Before taking Sorafenib , what precautions must I follow?

  • Effective birth control measures for both men and women are recommended during treatment and for at least 2 weeks after stopping treatment. Inform your doctor if you suspect you are or intend to get pregnant.
  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you:
    • Are on any medicines e.g. warfarin
    • Have any other medical conditions e.g. heart problems, high blood pressure

How should Sorafenib be used?

​​It is a tablet taken by mouth, with a glass of water. It should be taken on an empty stomach i.e. at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Take the exact number of tablets and follow the dosing schedule as instructed by your doctor.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

​If you miss a dose of Sorafenib, take it as soon as you can if it is within 6 hours of the missed dose. If it is over 6 hours since your missed dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your usual dosing time. Do not double the dose.

What should I do if I overdose?

​If you overdose on this medicine, inform your doctor immediately.
