Gemcitabine is an intravenous chemotherapy used alone or in combination with other agents for the treatment of certain types of cancer.

What side effects can
Gemcitabine
cause?
Early side effects
- Nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite may occur
There are medications available, which may prevent or decrease these side effects. If you are given these medications, take them as directed. - Fever (usually within 6-12 hours of treatment)
- Transient flu-like symptoms (e.g. joint and muscle ache, chills, fatigue, headache)
- Diarrhea or constipation.
Delayed side effects
- A drop in the white blood cell counts may occur 7 to 14 days after treatment
- Water retention causing swelling of feet or lower legs
- Itchy rashes may develop
- Temporary hair loss may occur
Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:
- Fever of 38°C or higher
- Unusual bleeding, bruising or black tarry stools
- Skin rash, itching or unusual redness
- Sore throat, hoarseness or painful mouth sores
- Persistent shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
