Dapoxetine - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Dapoxetine cause?

Common side effects include:

  • ​Dizziness or feeling of light-headedness
    • Make sure you are not dehydrated (especially if you have not had anything to drink in the past 4-6 hours), sweating for a long period or have an illness involving fever, diarrhoea or vomiting.
    • Take the medication with a full glass of water.
    • Get up slowly from a sitting or lying position.
    • This may affect your ability to drive and use machinery. Do not drive or do things that needs you to be alert.
  • Headache
  • Nausea

Rare but serious side effects include:

  • Changes to your mood or having thoughts of harming yourself
  • You have seizure episodes (fits)
  • You faint or feel light headed/giddy when you stand up
  • Excessive sweating

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:

  • Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

Before taking Dapoxetine , what precautions must I follow?

​Inform your healthcare professional if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication
  • You are taking medications called Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors such as Sildenafil, Tadalafil or Vardenafil
  • You have heart, kidney or liver problems
  • You have a history of dizziness from low blood pressure or have had fainting episodes before
  • You have or ever had;
    • Glaucoma, a condition where the eye pressure is increased
    • Mood conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, thoughts of suicide or harming yourself
    • Bleeding tendencies
    • Epilepsy (fits)

What food or medicine must I avoid when I take Dapoxetine ?

Avoid drinking alcohol as it may increase the risk of fainting.

Dapoxetine may interact with other medications. Inform your healthcare professional if you are taking or intend to take any other medication, supplements, traditional medications or herbal remedies.

This includes certain medicines such as:

  • Medicines used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
  • Anti-fungal medicines (e.g. ketoconazole)
  • Medicines used for mood conditions
  • St John’s Wort
