Vascular Investigation - Symptoms

When do I need a Vascular Investigation?

The following symptoms are indications that a duplex scan of the system may be required:-

  1. Carotid Arterial System
    1. Frequent dizziness or headaches
    2. Fainting and memory loss
    3. Sudden onset of visual disturbances
    4. Speech impairment
    5. Limb weakness and numbness
    6. Carotid bruits (murmur)
  2. Arteries of Upper and Lower Limbs
    1. Pain or cramps in the limbs either at rest or upon exertion
    2. Dusky fingers or toes
    3. Non-healing ulcers
    4. Speech impairment
    5. Sudden onset of pain in the limbs with coldness
    6. Absence of pulses
  3. Abdominal Aorta
    1. Presence of pulsating mass in the abdomen
  4. Renal Arteries
    1. Persistent high blood pressure
    2. Renal bruits
    3. Shrinking of kidneys
  5. Veins of Upper and Lower Limbs
    1. Swelling of limbs
    2. Pain or tenderness in the limbs
    3. Discolouration (red)
    4. Varicose veins
    5. Thrombosis in the veins
  6. Arterial Bypass Graft
    Patients who have undergone surgical bypass and require a follow-up:
    1. to document patency
    2. for early detection of re-stenosis or occlusion
    3. to detect and quantify new obstruction
  7. Dialysis Access Graft
    1. To document abnormalities of the graft
    2. Loss of graft thrill
    3. Difficult needle placement during dialysis
    4. Swelling
    5. Elevated venous pressure
