Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) is a form of high blood pressure in the lungs caused by blockages of the lung arteries due to old blood clots. The introduction of NHCS CTEPH programme, which started in 2016, is the first in Singapore to offer comprehensive treatment options, including pulmonary endarterectomy, balloon angioplasty and medical therapy, for CTEPH patients.
Medical treatment with blood thinning medication such as Warfarin can prevent new clots from forming but has no effects on the old clots.Another available treatment is pulmonary endarterectomy, an open-heart surgery.
