Profile

​Prof Tan Thuan Tong was the immediate past HOD for Department of Infectious Diseases after helming the Department for the past 9 years. Under his stewardship, the Department grew and developed its suite of clinical services supporting immunocompromised and transplant patients. The team also contributed to strengthening infection control and prevention efforts in SGH and prepared the Hospital for various emerging infectious disease outbreaks. 

In the last 3 years, Thuan Tong played a leading role in charting our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He served as the Co-Chair of the SGH Disease Outbreak Task Force and a Member of the SingHealth Disease Outbreak Task Force. He also sits in various COVID-19 related workgroups at the national level, providing thought leadership and putting in place clear and tight work processes and guidelines. 

To advance research, the Department established strong ties with Duke-NUS and Duke Durham. Despite his busy schedule, Thuan Tong publishes widely and has been the ID specialist examiner since 2014 and the Chair of the National Exit Exam Committee (ID) since 2016. He has been a mentor to many trainees and is a highly regarded physician. Prof Tan will continue to play an active role as the Vice Chair, Clinical Services
