Description

Dengue IgM antibody (anti-Dengue IgM)

Dengue IgG antibody (anti-Dengue IgG)

Specimen Required

3 – 5 mL plain blood.

To diagnose acute infection, send acute sample for dengue IgM antibody and if necessary, a second sample taken 7 – 10 days later for dengue IgM on the pair.

To identify previous exposure to dengue virus, please send a sample for dengue IgG. Although seroconversion of dengue IgG on paired samples 7-10 days apart demonstrates acute infection, dengue IgM and dengue NS1 antigen detection are preferred tests for diagnosis.

Storage and Transport

Refrigerate samples if delay in transporting to laboratory is anticipated. Do not freeze.

Method

Dengue IgM/ IgG : Enzyme immunoassay

Test Results

Acute infection: IgM antibody positive on acute serum or paired sera showing seroconversion of IgM and/or IgG

Past infection: Presence of IgG antibody in the absence of specific IgM

Note:  A positive result can be due to cross-reactive flavivirus antibodies and should be correlated clinically.

Turnaround Time

Dengue IgM : <1 – 5 days

Dengue IgG : <1 – 7 days

Day(s) Test Set up

Dengue IgM : Monday, Wednesday and Friday

Dengue IgG : Thursday
