The Department of Clinical Translational Research (DCR) at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) supports medical discovery through research laboratories and platforms in Genomics, Proteomics, Immunology, and Imaging. Since 2012, our Clinical Translational Sciences (CTS) Core has helped transform laboratory discoveries into practical healthcare solutions.
Our research environment connects 12 department laboratories across Academic Clinical Programs, including Medicine, Surgery, Neuroscience, and Musculoskeletal Sciences, enabling collaboration and innovation.
Our genomics capabilities encompass DNA sequencing, real-time q-PCR, and digital PCR technologies. The platform supports comprehensive genetic analysis, including SNP genotyping, microRNA studies, and gene expression analysis, complemented by DNA and RNA extraction facilities and gel imaging capabilities.
We offer extensive protein analysis through both one-dimension and two-dimension protein electrophoresis. Our facilities support protein expression studies, isolation, and purification processes. The platform includes advanced systems for quantitative multi-analyte profiling of cytokines, cell signalling analysis, and phosphoprotein detection, supported by fluorescence and luminescence plate readers, chemiluminescence imaging systems, and sophisticated spectrophotometers.
The immunology platform facilitates comprehensive research into immune responses and pathological mechanisms. Through advanced immunoassays and flow cytometry, we support studies in malignancies, autoimmune conditions, and infectious diseases. Our equipment enables detailed phenotyping and immune response monitoring across various disease states.
Our imaging capabilities combine confocal and conventional fluorescence microscopy with robust image analysis resources. Researchers can conduct detailed studies of both fixed and live cells, with facilities supporting both unlabelled and fluorescently labelled samples.
Our work integrates closely with several key units. We collaborate with the Clinical Trials Research Centre for biomarker-directed clinical trials, work alongside the Health Services Research & Data Management Core for clinical correlation studies, and partner with the Medical Technology & Device Development Core to explore innovative solutions in healthcare delivery.

A significant development in our research infrastructure is the establishment of Singapore's first hospital-based Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility for cell therapy research, scheduled for completion in Q4 2026. This facility will enable us to conduct Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials in cell therapy, maintain rigorous quality control standards, and build local expertise in cellular therapeutics. The development represents our commitment to advancing therapeutic research in Singapore.
Our vision extends beyond in-house research to building meaningful partnerships with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. These collaborations support the sustainability of our GMP facility operations while advancing cell therapy development in Singapore.
Through industry partnerships, we create opportunities for shared success. Companies gain access to our GMP facility for cell therapy development, while we maintain operational capabilities through strategic cost-sharing arrangements. These collaborations provide our research teams with industry exposure and strengthen Singapore's cell therapy ecosystem through effective public-private engagement.
This collaborative model aims to create a sustainable framework that supports continued innovation in cell therapy research. By combining resources and expertise, we work to ensure the facility remains a viable and productive research asset for years to come.
We welcome partnerships with industry players who share our commitment to advancing medical research. Our collaboration model focuses on creating sustainable operations while maximising resource utilisation. By working together, partners gain access to our facilities and expertise, while contributing to Singapore's growing cell therapy research capabilities. These partnerships enable knowledge exchange and drive technological advancement in healthcare.
