Local Fellowship in Advanced Sleep Medicine and Non-Invasive Ventilation

Training Objectives/Goals

1. Explain the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and public health implications of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and its management

2. Evaluate and manage patients who present with OSA

  • Management and titration of positive pressure ventilation
  • Indications and management of patients requiring alternative treatment for Sleep-disordered breathing including indications and management of patients for surgery and for dental appliances 

3. To acquire knowledge of the organization and operation of a sleep laboratory (unit staffing requirement, quality assurance standards, skills and education).

4. Evaluate and manage patients who present with central sleep apnoea and sleep hypoventilation syndromes

5. Evaluate and manage patients who present with complaints of insomnia

6. Evaluate and manage patients who present with complaints of abnormal sleep movements, behaviours, and experiences

7. Evaluate patients with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and assess and treat the daytime consequences of sleep disorders, including but not limited to        patients with:

  • Narcolepsy
  • idiopathic hypersomnia and other neurological sleep symptoms
  • disturbances of circadian rhythm

8. Evaluate and manage patients with chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure requiring long-term home non-invasive ventilation, and the different ventilator        strategies for titration and management of patients with different indications for these treatments, including but not limited to the following:

  • OHS
  • Restrictive lung disease
  • COPD
  • Neuromuscular disorders

Admission Criteria

  • Possess valid practicing license with the Singapore Medical Council
  • Registered under the Register of Specialists with Specialist Accreditation Board (SAB) in either Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry or Ear Nose and Throat Surgery.
  • Grade of applicant: Associate Consultant and above
