Art Therapy

Art therapy is a specialised form of psychotherapy that utilises the creative process of art-making to promote emotional, mental, and physical well-being. It allows individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a nonverbal and expressive manner, making it especially valuable for those who may find it difficult to verbalise their emotions and thoughts.

How does Art Therapy Work?

During art therapy sessions, patients are encouraged to engage in various art-making techniques, such as painting, drawing, sculpting, collage, or other forms of creative expression. The process of creating art becomes a means of communication and self-discovery, which supports individuals in externalising their internal conflicts, subconscious thoughts, and processing traumatic experiences.

Singapore General Hospital (SGH) offers art therapy services for individuals, families, and patient groups in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Our diverse range of approaches includes:
  • Trauma-informed psychodynamic art therapy
  • Narrative art therapy
  • Mindfulness-based art therapy

Our Art Therapists at the Art Therapy and Music Therapy unit are professionally certified and have undergone Masters-level training, committed to providing a trauma-informed and inclusive environment for all.
