A select group of patients with chronic respiratory failure can benefit from having a device to assist their breathing in the long term – either part-time or round the clock, through a mask interface (non-invasive ventilation) or via a hole in the breathing tube (mechanical ventilation via tracheostomy).

Patients for whom this might be beneficial include those with obesity hypoventilation syndrome, kyphoscoliosis, spinal cord injury, COPD, bronchiectasis and certain neuromuscular conditions such as motor neuron disease and muscular dystrophies.

The Chronic NIV Clinic is able to provide input from respiratory and sleep specialists, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, speech therapists and other specialists as necessary in order to assess the needs of each patient and provide the most suitable form of ventilatory support, and manage any other medical complications that may arise.
