Pharmacist Career Path

Our pharmacists participate in patient care by providing our professional pharmaceutical care services, as well as a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical supply system.

Pharmacists at SGH enjoy a varied career pathway aligned along three tracks: Professional, Clinical and Research. While a pharmacist may choose to follow either of these tracks depending on his/her strengths and interests, each individual will experience a matrix of administrative duties, clinical practice, research, and education activities.

Our key role in patient care is carried out through review of medication orders and provision of pharmacotherapy advice to physicians and nurses, resulting in optimal use of medicines and reductions in preventable adverse drug reactions. We dispense medicines to our patients with tailored counselling and information. In addition, our department has incubated and established a number of specialised Clinical Pharmacy Services, many of which are firsts in Singapore!

Our pharmacists involved in Education and training conduct teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate-level. A number of our staff are Faculty with the Post-graduate Allied Health Institute, conducting programmes for pharmacists and healthcare professionals. Pharmacists have opportunities to enrol in formal programmes such as postgraduate studies, clinical attachments/residencies at overseas centres of excellence, as well as participate in conferences.

On the Research front, our department is focused on producing quality results which are translated into patient care.

Technologically, we are now poised to implement the world’s first automated prescription dispensing system, which utilises robotics to pick and package medication. RFID technology is then used to track and auto-assemble all items for a patient, delivered via conveyor right to the dispensing pharmacist’s counter.
